Wood ash lye is an ancient, natural detergent, whose process consists of recovering the potash from the ash by immersing it in water, then decanting the mixture to obtain an aqueous, odorless, transparent solution.

Washing with ash: back to basics

Trained as an electrician, Ghjuvan-Dumenicu Santoni founded A Cendera, the natural wood ash-based detergent made in Corsica. The idea was born out of conversations with his grandmother, who recounted how laundry was washed in the washhouse in her childhood.

Curious and self-taught, Ghjuvan-Dumenicu carried out research, notably through scientific journals, and after several trials, came up with the finished product A Bronda, a natural Corsican detergent fattu in Corsica, healthy and waste-free, perfectly compatible with your washing machine.

Manufacturing process: From ash to detergent

The manufacturing process involves several stages. The ash is first sieved to remove the lumps of charcoal that will be preserved for the sale of charcoal.

It is then immersed in a first vat, before being decanted twice into two other vats over a period of several weeks to obtain a liquid solution rich in potash (potassium carbonate), colorless, transparent and odorless.

The deposit that forms after decanting is also recovered to produce a scouring cream, notably for hand washing.

A natural, effective and healthy alternative

Ghjuvan Dumenicu Santoni - A Cendera - Talasani, Corse

Over and above the entrepreneurial aspect of his business, which is also reported on Corse Matin and RCFM, Ghjuvan-Dumenicu finds satisfaction in giving meaning to what he does, combining work and a philosophy of life with the aim of helping to preserve both the environment and health by transforming a global consumer product - washing powder - into a local, ecological and healthy product.

100% Natural - No chemical additives

Most industrial detergents use ingredients that are harmful to both health and the environment. Their labels state this with warning signs about the risks of components such as perfumes or preservatives (Hexyl Cinnamal, Isoeugenol, Benzisothiazolinone,) which can produce allergic reactions.

Hypoallergenic, odorless detergent

A Cendera detergent contains no odors or additives, making it a hypoallergenic detergent base. Asked why she doesn't incorporate ranges with natural essential oils, Ghjuvan-Dumenicu explains that she wants to keep the product as healthy as possible, without risking irritation or allergies for users. You can, however, add an essential oil of your own, as well as white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.

This choice has been confirmed by the gratifying comments of users such as Karine, who explains that her daughter's eczema has disappeared since she switched to this natural detergent.

Efficient washing of whites and colors

Natural ash detergent is natural and concentrates on the essentials: effective washing without damaging clothes, since ash detergent is renowned for its mildness. You can use it indiscriminately on all your clothes and household linen, for colors as well as whites, without risk for any textile.

An environmentally-friendly detergent

This biodegradable ecological alternative dispenses with the use of chemical detergents to limit water and soil pollution. It is in the process of obtaining the Nature et Progrès label.

Towards 0 waste

A Cendera uses wood ash from local wood-fired ovens (pizza trucks, restaurants), ideal for a zero-waste solution. In the same vein, Ghjuvan-Dumenicu uses reusable cans, and invites his customers to take the reflex of returning with their bottles or cans.

To dose your machines, count 10 ml per kilo of laundry. On average, 10 washes per Litre.

Although natural, wood ash lye is a product that should not come into contact with the eyes or respiratory tract, and should not be allowed to come into contact with the skin. Keep out of reach of children. As with all cleaning products, a warning is indicated on the label with the number of an available poison control center.

Wood ash, a natural detergent known since ancient times

Wood ash is a natural detergent because it contains alkaline compounds with basic PH cleaning power. Mixed with water, it produces a natural detergent capable of dissolving grease and removing dirt.

The Greeks and Romans used it, as did the Middle Ages throughout Europe, when clothes were soaked in hot water and sifted ash before being rinsed.
