The Indian star tortoise
Native to India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Indian star tortoise(Geochelone elegans) is one of the world's most elegant land tortoises. Its domed shell, adorned with golden star patterns, enables it to blend into the dry vegetation and dazzle visitors with its unique beauty.
Habitat and characteristics
This species lives in dry, scrubby areas, where it enjoys a warm climate all year round. It can grow up to 30 cm long and prefers both sunny and sheltered environments. Its highly rigid shell provides effective protection from predators and heat.
Diet and behavior
Strictly herbivorous, the Indian Star Tortoise feeds on clover, dandelion flowers and leaves. It also eats fruit that has fallen to the ground and a few succulents. Quiet and discreet, it spends most of the day moving slowly between sunny and shady areas.
Preservation of the species
A victim of illegal trade and the destruction of its natural habitat, this species is now protected by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Parc A Cupulatta contributes to its preservation by raising public awareness of the fragility of Asian turtles.
